In general, wisdom teeth are not able to fit properly in the mouth. Also known as third molars, they are the last teeth to come in, around late adolescence or early adulthood. Because wisdom teeth are commonly unable to fit in the mouth, many dental professionals recommend early treatment by removing wisdom teeth before they cause complications. If wisdom teeth are not removed, they are susceptible to many complications such as impaction, infection, pain, dental disease, and more. The treatment of these complications can be extensive, costly, and uncomfortable.

Because there is so little space available by the time wisdom teeth erupt, it is common for them to come in sideways. They are also known to cause damage to adjacent teeth, shift the alignment of the bite, cause infections and decay, or remain stuck beneath the gums.

Problems Caused By Wisdom Teeth

  • Tooth Damage. Because there is little room for these extra molars, wisdom teeth can run into other teeth and damage their roots.
  • Shifting of Teeth. A wisdom tooth can shift the other teeth as it makes room to come in. This results in dental crowding and affects the alignment of the bite.
  • Pain. If a wisdom tooth is impacted, it can cause jaw pain and swelling.
  • Tooth Decay. Wisdom teeth that are too close to the other teeth can make it difficult to clean, which can lead to the build-up of the bacteria that causes decay.
  • Infections. A wisdom tooth that has only partially erupted through the gum line is vulnerable to bacteria.
  • Cysts and Tumors. Cysts or tumors caused by impacted wisdom teeth require prompt treatment to prevent damage to the surrounding bone tissue.

Wisdom teeth that may threaten a patient’s oral or overall health are recommended for removal. Wisdom teeth are usually extracted during the teenage years, when their roots are not fully formed. This makes removal and recovery easier. Your dentist can monitor the development of your child’s wisdom teeth through regular checkups to determine the appropriate time for treatment. If you would like a to schedule a consultation appointment to see Dr. Hogg or Dr. Kotecki to discuss your child’s wisdom teeth, please contact our front office.

What does the removal procedure entail?

The specific treatment for the removal of your child’s wisdom teeth will depend on factors such as their position and root development. Removing a wisdom tooth that has completely erupted through the gums is just like any other tooth extraction. A tooth that is partially or completely underneath the gums requires a more involved procedure.

The procedure will begin with the administration of anesthesia. Once you are comfortable, your oral surgeon will remove any bone or gum tissue that may be blocking the tooth. The tooth may be sectioned and extracted in smaller pieces for easier removal.
