What are dental implants?
A dental implant looks and functions like a natural tooth. They are a popular tooth replacement option because they offer a permanent solution to restore oral health and function.
A single dental implant comes together in three parts:
- The screw is made up of medical-grade titanium and placed into the jaw bone to secure the new tooth in place.
- The abutment acts as a connector between the screw and the crown.
- The crown, designed to naturally blend in with the surrounding teeth, is the visible part of the dental implant.
What are the benefits?
Dental implants are a popular option for tooth replacement – and for good reason! Patients who have dental implants can expect to enjoy
- Talking and smiling with confidence
- Eating favorite foods again
- Permanent tooth replacement solution
- Increased stability of the jaw
- Protection against bone loss
- Improved self-confidence
- Restoration of natural appearance
. . . and more!
What happens during placement?
Before we begin the placement of your dental implants, you will have a consultation with one of our experienced oral surgeons first. Dr. Hogg and Dr. Kepros will customize a treatment plan based upon completion of an oral evaluation, medical review, and imaging during your consultation. Anesthesia options will also be discussed and decided during this appointment.
Patient safety and comfort are our top priorities. We encourage you to ask any questions you may have during this time so that you feel at ease as you prepare for your dental implant procedure. We will also provide pre- and post-operative instructions after your consultation.
Your surgical appointment will start by answering any other questions you may have. We will then administer the form of anesthesia that was agreed upon in your consultation. Once you are relaxed and sleeping comfortably, the oral surgeon will place the dental implant screw into the jaw bone. Once the surgical site is stitched up, you will continue to rest comfortably until the effects of the anesthesia have worn off. Although your custom-made crown is not ready to be worn at this time, a temporary prosthesis can be worn over the implant.
Over the next several weeks, the screw will fuse with the jaw bone in a process called osseointegration. The custom-made crown and connecting abutment will be placed after the healing period. The placement of your permanent crown means that you can start enjoying all of the benefits of having a dental implant.
